Exploring Mxenes as
Emerging Two-Dimensional Materials for Electrochemical Technologies
MXenes,
a family of two-dimensional transition-metal carbides, nitrides, and
carbonitrides, have attracted growing interest as functional materials for
electrochemical technologies due to their metallic conductivity, tunable
surface terminations, hydrophilic character, and large accessible surface area.
In this talk, the development of MXene-based materials as versatile platforms
for catalytic and sensing applications will be highlighted, with an emphasis on
the structure–property relationships governing charge transfer, surface
adsorption, and electrochemical activity. In electrocatalysis, MXene
incorporation can facilitate interfacial electron transport, improve
active-site accessibility, and promote favorable adsorption of reaction
intermediates, thereby enhancing performance in the hydrogen evolution
reaction. Beyond energy conversion, MXene-based interfaces also show strong
potential for electrochemical sensing, as demonstrated by paraoxon detection,
in which surface-active sites and favorable analyte–electrode interactions
contribute to sensitive and selective responses. These case studies highlight
the multifunctional role of MXenes in bridging sustainable energy conversion
and environmental monitoring. The talk will further address current challenges,
including oxidation stability, surface chemistry control, and scalable material
processing, as key considerations for advancing MXene-based electrochemical
systems toward practical applications.
