Revisiting and expanding the old concept of structure-activity relationship in electrocatalysis

With an increasing demand for a sustainable future, there is an urgent need for developing clean energy systems, such as fuel cells, electrolyzers, and carbon dioxide recyclers, to solve energy and environmental issues. Electrocatalysis plays a central role in these modern technologies. Potential difference at the interface of solid electrode and liquid electrolyte triggers electron transport and its rate (or kinetics) is strongly affected by physicochemical properties of both phases. However, our understanding regarding electron transport during electrocatalysis is unfortunately insufficient and is still limited to the knowledge developed in the 1950s (e.g., Marcus Theory). While great advances have hitherto been made in the synthesis of electrocatalytic materials — based on the liking electrocatalytic properties with catalytic materials only such as d-band theory— and their applications, the interfacial design and the unveiling its role in electrocatalysis become a long-standing goal in the field of electrocatalysis. In this seminar, I will introduce our ongoing efforts in order to link both solid and liquid structures with electrocatalytic properties. Beyond the conventional structure-activity relationship in the electrode materials, the relationship among the complex interface-consisting components and further the experimental strategy for designing tailored interfaces for the efficient interconversion of electrical and chemical energy will be discussed.
