The Kimoon Kim Lectureship was established to honor Professor Kimoon Kim for his 36 years (1988–2024) of distinguished service and exceptional contributions to POSTECH. Professor Kim was the first University Professor and among the inaugural POSTECH Fellows in the university’s history, reflecting his pioneering role and enduring impact on the institution. He also served as the Founding Director of the Center for Self-Assembly and Complexity (CSC) at the Institute for Basic Science (IBS).

Professor Kim has made significant contributions to the field of supramolecular chemistry. Over the course of his distinguished career, he has published more than 350 research papers and supervised over 200 graduate students and postdoctoral researchers. His scientific excellence has been recognized through numerous prestigious honors, including the Korea Science Award (2001), the Samsung Ho-Am Prize in Science (2006), and the Best Scientist and Engineer Award (2008). Internationally, he has been honored with the TWAS Award (2002) and the Izatt–Christensen Award (2012). He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, Republic of Korea—the nation’s highest distinction for scholars.

Endowed through his generous donation upon retirement, the Lectureship reflects Professor Kim’s enduring commitment to advancing science and nurturing the next generation of researchers. Each year, the Lectureship invites world-renowned scholars to deliver lectures that share profound scientific insights and inspire creativity, collaboration, and excellence within the global scientific community.
