Organic Synthesis around the Silicon Atom: The Si(pan) Platform

The ability to incorporate silicon atoms into molecular structures at specific positions within molecular skeletons opens new possibilities in synthetic chemistry. This presentation describes our development of synthetic methodologies in organosilicon chemistry based on our key functional group: dioxasilepanes [Si(pan)].
The Si(pan) unit features a tetramethylated, seven-membered ring structure that represents a breakthrough in cyclic dialkoxysilane chemistry. This unique architecture provides exceptional kinetic stability while preserving the Lewis acidity essential for silicon-centered reactivity.
Si(pan)-containing compounds exhibit remarkable stability under diverse reaction conditions yet maintain high selectivity in key transformations, including C–H silylations, arylalkali-metal substitutions, and silanediol synthesis. Additionally, we have developed an innovative silylation methodology utilizing silylpotassium species generated in situ from Si(pan)Me dimers. These advances establish Si(pan) as a versatile functional group that enables previously challenging transformations in organosilicon chemistry and thus expands the toolkit for silicon-based molecular construction.
