Chemistry is the scientific study of the properties of matters. It is a science that investigates the composition, structure, and properties of substances, and studies reactions that occur when one substances change into another along with the accompanying energy transfer. Everything – including our body, the Earth, and the universe we live in – is made up of materials, and this makes chemistry involved with a very wide area. The curriculum of the Department of Chemistry can be generally divided into the following.

  • Drag from side to side.

Section Content
Physical chemistry Physical chemistry focuses on the basic principles of chemistry, such as the structure and properties of atoms/molecules, and chemical reaction theory. It includes thermodynamics, chemical equilibrium, statistical thermodynamics, reaction kinetics, quantum chemistry, atomic and molecular structure, molecular spectroscopy, crystal and liquid structure, photochemistry, and molecular dynamics.
Organic chemistry Organic chemistry involves the scientific study of the structure, properties, and reactions of organic compounds. Most of the living organisms, natural products, and drugs are organic compounds. These organic compounds are isolated, structurally characterized, and chemically synthesized to develop them into meaningful materials. It includes study of stereochemical properties, reaction mechanisms, and spectroscopies.
Inorganic chemistry Inorganic chemistry deals with the chemical bondings and molecular structures of all elements in the periodic table. It includes theoretical principles, properties, reactions, and synthesis of transition metal coordination complexes, catalysts, organometallic and inorganic materials.
Analytical chemistry Analytical chemistry uses instruments to study methods for identification of the structure, separation of mixtures, and quantification of substances. Quantitative analysis based on chemical equilibrium, and studies on the principles and applications of various analytical instruments are included in this field.
Polymer chemistry Polymer chemistry is a field that studies the physical and chemical properties and synthesis of polymer materials such as synthetic resins, synthetic fibers, synthetic rubbers, and biomolecules.
Biochemistry Biochemistry studies life phenomena on a chemical perspective. Research on the function and structure of biomaterials includes not only the understanding and application of life-related phenomena, but also effective solutions that can deal with various problems in life science.

There are more fields than the above-mentioned representative ones, however, all fields in chemistry require understanding of the other fields. Chemistry is a fundamental discipline that provides a foundation for fields such as chemical engineering, material science, life science, pharmaceutical science, physics, and electronic & electrical engineering. Therefore, sufficient flexibility has been implemented in the compilation of the subject in chemistry department, so that it could be interrelated to other science and engineering areas.

General chemistry I & II are basic courses for science and engineering students. These courses consist of lectures that cover the basic chemistry principles and lab sessions which train basic synthesis, analysis, and quantitative measurement skills. The introductory general chemistry course is held to aid the students who are having hardship by not taking advanced chemistry courses in high school.

Program Requirements

Chemistry students should consult with their supervisors to take required subjects and electives for their majors so that they can focus on their fields of interest from the sophomore. Students should take at least 125 credits, including general institute requirements, major requirements (34 credits) and major electives (15 credits).
