Chemistry is a fundamental science that closely examines the structure and nature of matters. It studies how new matters are created through transformation and is a basis of understanding and advancing to many areas that are directly related to human welfare such as medicine, materials, and energy. Chemistry has always been at the core of the modern life we enjoy today. Without advanced medicines, fertilizers, and synthetic resin (like plastics), the humanity wouldn't have been able to overcome disease and famine. Also, it is chemistry that propels future development of other scientific and technological disciplines such as electronic engineering, life science, and renewable energy. Such broad basis of scientific and technological advancements can only be provided through chemists who tirelessly pursue new understanding and original applications. The curriculums of the Department of Chemistry at POSTECH is comprised of both traditional (organic, physical, analytical, inorganic) and modern disciplines of chemistry (macromolecular, biochemistry) and students can also choose to study the following courses that represent the forefront of the modern chemistry : nano chemisry, chemical biology, medicinal chemistry, computational cjemistry and others. Presently, the department of Chemistry has 24 faculty members, about 100 undergraduate students, 160 graduate students, and 20 researchers who tirelessly pursue excellence in education and research. Chemistry has a wide range of applications that are directly related to human welfare. As such, students who graduate with a chemistry degree can choose from a variety of career options. Therefore, the department of chemistry aims to cultivate researchers whose knowledge and understanding go beyond basics of chemistry and who could also contribute to wide range of related areas. Today, researchers with solid understanding of the basics of chemistry are in demand in almost all fields of application science and technology. Medicine, macromolecules, petrochemistry, and catalysts are just few examples of Career Fields chosen by many chemists. Trained professional chemists have been making significant contributions in other basic research areas (such as electronic industry and bioengineering) and they continue to prove themselves as valuable assets in emerging fields such as environmental science (pollution related). With growing emphasis on basic research, elite researchers are in demand now more than ever before. Therefore, the Department of Chemistry at POSTECH strongly encourage post undergraduate students to seek higher education so they can better prepare themselves as professional researchers. The university's aim is to nurture competent researchers. Once enrolled, POSTECH provides its graduate students scholarships to relieve their financial burden and they are also given access to high-end laboratories where students can perform creative research and experiments. Our goal is to provide opportunities and ideal environment to bring out the best of all POSTECH students. To do so, we will continue to do our best in assisting the students.

The Department of Chemistry at POSTECH¡¡is a three time winner of outstanding research center by the Korea Science and Engineering Foundation have successuflly hosted the following research centers: Center for Biofunctional Molecules (1990~1998), Center for Integrated Molucular Systems (2000~2009) and Electro-Photo Behaviors in Advanced Molecular Systems (2008~present). It was also selected as 1st and 2nd level Brain Korea 21 (BK21) Science Technology Business group by the Korea Research Foundation. Furthermore, POSTECH is home to number of large-scale national and international project research centers such as Center for Smart Supermolecules, Center for Superfunctional Materials, Polymer Synthesis and Physics Lab, Polymer Physical Chemistry Lab, Nanophotonics & Nanomedical Lab, and Laboratory for Modified Nucleic Acid Systems. The Graduate Institute of Advanced Materials Science and Computational Science Center are marked by active participation by many Chimistry professors at POSTECH, and we are proud to tell you that both centers were selected as part of the World Class University (WCU) Program. With all these outstanding accomplishments, the Department of Chemistry at POSTECH is, wihtout question, the best place to study chemistry in Korea. All members of the Department of Chemistry at POSTECH will not stay complacent with its accomplishments but continue to strive to gain more competitiveness in the international arena.
